Yes..it's too bad she didn't play Shakespeare. Now that would have been amusing. She could have made tragedy out of comedy and comedy out of tragedy.

Not really - I can't think of any Shakespearean roles for Judy. Even musicalised versions - Kiss Me Kate and West Side Story..no, Judy and Shakespeare just do not mix.

Regarding Funny Girl, although Judy may have been considered for a film based on the life of Fanny Brice it was not Funny Girl as we know it. The show was originally written with Anne Bancroft in mind and called "A Very Special Person". Others who were considered for the stage version were Carol Burnett and Edyie Gorme (who turned it down when the producers would not let Steve Lawrence play Nick Arnstein). NONE of the songs were written for Judy they were all written for the original broadway show by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill not a film.

To my knowledge, Judy was never called in to act in any live Broadway show (except her own concerts at the Palace). She was too risky an investment. A shame, because I think she would have made an excellent dramatic stage actress.
I did read that Lorna said she would have made a good 'Gypsy' or 'Auntie Mame' but I don't know if Judy ever 'auditioned' for those parts. I do know Judy never got the roles because of her illnesses.

Apparently there was a mixup at the studio - MGM meant to drop Judy not Deanna. Deanna then got picked up by Universal studios and made 'Three smart girls' which made a mint for the studio thus saving it from bankruptcy.
"Three Smart Girls' was originally meant for Judy.

When Deanna became a success Judy was jealous. Her sister talked about this in the 'Rainbow' book by Christopher Finch. I've never seen a Deanna Durbin movie so I can't really comment.
Her life may have been very different if she'd been picked up by Universal instead of slogging it out at MGM.

Did Deanna ever write her memoirs?

No, I don't think there's ever been one, any books about Deanna Durbin are long out of print.

don't know, it was late 60's. Judy would have been very ill at the time. Julie Andrews played all three big ones on stage : Marry Popping, the sound of music, and My fair Lady.
It would have been wonderful if Judy was healthy enough to take on those roles.

Julie Andrews only played My Fair Lady on stage. Sound of Music was Mary Martin and Mary Poppins only became a stage show several years ago.

Judt read in the paper that My Fair Lady is coming to town. i can't wait, hope they also have Mamma Mia as well. Or the Sound of mUsic. They are good broadways shows. I don't think , with the exception of Oz, any of Judy's movie musicals translated well to the stage.

There was talk about 10 years ago that Andrew Lloyd Webber was planning a version of a Star is Born for Broadway. Was supposed to be in the era of the Judy version. Dont know whatever happened to it though... There was a version of Meet Me in St. Louis in the late 80s, but I dont think it was really that big of a hit.

hmm I wonder if it would be that hard to produce..a back-stage musical on stage.. I would definitely beg borrow or steal tickets to see a really good production of ASIB! I hope they make it like the Judy musical version rather than the original or the barbra streisand monstrosity. Any casting ideas? If anyone lives in NYC or Hollywood maybe they could pitch it to the big producers? ? I heard 'high school musical 'has a version on ICE!

Are Andrew Lloyd Webber planning any new musicals? What was their last one? I know Oz is peformed a lot as a high school musical, it is very popular. And there's Wicked.
But don't know about any Judy themed musical. There's been lots of off Broadway type tributes, but not any based on her movies. I think Easter Parade would be a good one to produce. ASIB is a bit too sad and tragic to be a proper musical.
Hey, I have an idea! Lets PUT ON A SHOW!!!!! (sorry, that was a bad quip)
Which barn should we do it in?
