Ok I've been thinking about your question carpase3 and wonder, you might not know that Judy sang a song called 'Fascinating Rhythm'. Try and listen to that if you can, when you hear the lyrics and the melody you'll know it's something you can't possibly explain.
But I'm gonna attempt to try...
Judy Garland gave off special vibrations whenever she used her voice and especially when she sang a song. If you ever liked music, or thought to yourself just what does 'love' sound like in the human voice then young Judy Garland is your answer. Judy's voice possesess warmth, humour, honesty, vulnerability. Judy sang from the heart (it's often said she used 'chest voice') while most other people just sing from their throat. Judy used her speaking voice when she sang. She never had to fake a vocal - nothing was 'put on'.
I'm not sure what a real angel sounds like, but if angels could be humans, they'd sound like Judy Garland. When you hear it you can't fail to be moved.
Have you watched A star is Born?
There's a scene in that movie where Norman Maine puts on Esthers (Judy's ) record. He's talking to a head honcho at the movie studio. He opens the door wider, hoping the guy will hear the strains of Judy's voice coming through. Sure enough, the guy asks just who is that voice?
Normane Maine describes watching Esther perform. Like a prize fight, or little jolts of pleasure.
I confess, I really adore Judy Garland. When I put on her record, I'm compelled to turn the sound up and open the window so the neighbours can hear. She's that good. I have brought her to work a few times. When I have her on, she always puts me in a happy mood.
I can't say that about any other singer except for Judy.
