Hi Everyone!
I just watched MGM:when the lion roars (part 7), and Mickey Rooney said no one in MGM gave Judy drugs. I wonder who gave Judy drugs so that she was addicted to it? Thanks.

Hi Cassie. Its great to hear someones voice on this web site again. ( all the old timers have disappeared. ) The book " GET HAPPY " says that Judys mom, ETHEL, was giving Judy and her two sisters uppers and downers to perform and sleep long before Judy signed her MGM contract. MGM wanted her to loose weight and doctors who worked for MGM would prescribe her uppers and downers for that purpose. Judy would learn to obtain them herself. I would take a grain of salt with what Mickey said. We all love him because he really cared about Judy but him being a consummate showman he always projects Judy in the most favorable light.
You know, if Judy wouldnt have gotten messed up on drugs and had a nice dignified older life like maybe running a music school, it would make me question what I find so astonishing about her.

Judy was addicted to prescription drugs that the studio prescribed for her and her mother enforced. I think Mickey Rooney was just trying to display her in a better light, but personally, I don't blame her one bit for her addiction.. She had to take them to keep up with her maniac schedule. She didn't even know that they were addictive until she became addicted, because they were prescribed by a doctor and everyone on the MGM lot was taking them.
But I think it is wiser to focus on her talent and her winning personality, rather than focusing on her personal life.

the first moment you became aware of her.... Once I watched a movie from TCM called "Meet me in St.Louis" and I found the actress very charming and so I searched the information about her. That's how I know about Judy. I found her songs on youtube and her songs are very touching.

Thanks Cassie. Well said. That is a beautiful film. I love the scene where the children are having a fire on mischief night, and Judy burns the screen up with the Trolley song, that really scares the heck out of me. Thanks again.

I wanted to add something that I feel strongly about.
The Trolley song is a good example of how Judy lets down her defenses and lets the Dark side of music flow through her to create something with power to actually Heal the souls of her audience. She has done this at every stage of her life. In her very early years it stands out so much in that it comes from a child. This she does better than any Entertainer that ever existed.

gosh it's been a long time since been on these boards but just feel like talking Judy again. Forgot my password and everything...hmmm
conwention what you said about Judy healing the souls in the audience was interesting. I've read that people thought she really was as great as Aimee Semple Machpherson, they compared her to a revivalist, back in the day, in the US they would have these revivals and 'great awakenings' outdoors and people would sing and praise the Lord people would get healed on the spot when they listened to her preach, and come to know Jesus. Don't know if Judy ever did that but certainly she had some kind of power, if it was from God I don't know, she had a gift anyway.
A friend I know says 'she's like magic' so maybe she had 'magic' powers and what you said about the 'dark' side may be just the fact that she performed a lot at night time and had to take pills to keep her up with that hectic shedule, all hours of the night, and not go to sleep till morning, that really happened, they had no concept of proper bedtime for her she just kept going.
It's interesting you would say that she had that 'better than any entertainer that ever existed' in my time it was MJ, we all went crazy for him as the King of Pop, or even Elvis, Judy was long gone before I was born so I can't say she was the greatest when I never really got a chance to see her live, but she certainly had an immediacy about her, she literally touched people all the time, then studio heads accused her of touching people too much. She just wanted to hug millions of people at once and that came across in her voice and the way she stood there and sang, arms open wide.

Hi Judydarling. Great to hear from you and Rainbowgirl. I planed to talk alot about Judy doing something better than anyone Else in the world but I'm kind of stressed and burned out from my new story. I guess my main point would have been that all her gifts flow from her unique development as a child, and the contemplation of her frame of mind at her early life is the most entertaining thing of all. conwention
