CYNTHIA
Cynthia's life was going to change forever today. She came from Phoenix Arizona with her parents to visit her cousin Muggsie in Lancaster. After a few days, boredom started setting in for the kid's. Muggsies mother said " Muggsie, why don't you take Cynthia over to meet Baby? Who's she Cynthia asked. She's a friend of mine, ( Muggsie said ) her real name is Frances but we all call her Babe. We always have a good time. Whats she like? Aw, shes real funny ( Muggsie continued ) She can cuss as good as any of the boys and she never gets tired when were riding our bikes. Her father owns the theater in town. Well how old is she? Cynthia asked. When Cynthia learned Muggsies friend was two years younger than her and her cousin she knew she had no interest in meeting a child. Muggsie and Cynthia started their trip through the heart of Lancaster on their bikes. Muggsie took her up Lancaster blvd past the Western hotel and the fire house which were washing their engines ( the girls splashing there bikes through the puddles ). Suddenly Muggsie turned left and cut down through a series of alleys to connect with Milling street. Cynthia followed her cousin with no hesitation. She had complete confidence in Muggsies adept quickness and ability to handle any problems that would come their way. It was exhilarating for Cynthia as they flashed by within inches of people carrying their wash, watching their children, talking with neighbors. The girls suddenly burst out into the sunshine on Milling street. They flashed by a big vegetable stand on a large wagon as Muggsie called out " Hey! Mr Frederique " and the girls heard behind them the owner of the stand yell out " Hey Muggsie! You come visit your pal Mr Frederique sometime eh? ( in his Italian accent ). "All right Mr Rique " Muggsie called back. Cynthia breathed in deeply the honey suckle scents of the vines covering the fences along Milling street. They crossed over Beech and continued on to Cedar ave where a small white church was coming into view. Cynthia would attend this church on Sunday and listen to her cousin singing in the choir. Muggsie made a fast turn on Cedar with Cynthia following and Mr Taylor walking along the avenue comically held on to his hat so it wouldn't get blown off as he called out " Muggsie " as Muggsie let out a big " ARGHH " and slapped her hand to her forehead ( the way she would do ) when someone teased her. For to love Muggsie was to love her good heart. As they passed the grammar school Muggsie motioned that they were approaching Babes house. They crossed New Grove street and coasted their bikes up the driveway to the side of the house. That's her Muggsie said pointing to the back yard. Judy was picking her nose, looking off into space. She wore a dark blue dress, no shoes, her head of healthy dark hair falling on her shoulders. Around her feet were several kittens. Suddenly she noticed Muggsie and her companion and laughed in her Judy Garland manner at being caught picking her nose. How was it Babe? Muggsie asked as she and Cynthia walked up. Aw, it was real good Muggs Babe said. I was thinking of you the whole time. Judy gave Cynthia a very welcoming smile as Muggsie said this is my cousin Cynthia from Phoenix. Cynthia's a real pretty name Babe said " pouring on the charm " . Without waiting on a response Babe said do you like kittens Cynthia and she picked up a kitten handing it to Cynthia saying this is Duster. He loves to be rubbed on his back right next to his tail. The three girls sat down on the grass each with a kitten as Cynthia listened to Muggsie and Babe catch up on talking about friends and school. Babe was a nice enough kid Cynthia thought but she didn't see what all the fuss was about. Cynthia was looking at the kitten she was petting when she heard Babe make the most preposterous statement. Phoenix? Babe said, I hear that their gonna make Phoenix another capital along with Washington to help with the extra people if Hawaii becomes a state. Cynthia looked up at Babe and saw a wink that would change her life forever. It was the wink of a tough guy in a gangster movie. The wink used the whole face with the lips and cheek balled up making the hippest expression an eight year old ever made. It was a bolt of lightning that ran through Cynthia. Cynthia looked anew at Babe and was stunned by Babes sly self depreciating sense of humor that Babe expressed through facial and body gestures that crossed unashamed without permission and penetrated deeply into Cynthia's guarded soul. Babe was encouraging Cynthia through eye movement to contribute to her tall tale as Muggsie sat quietly petting her kitten " always suspicious of anything Babe might say ". Cynthia ventured " that's right, they've already started digging a foundation for the building in downtown Phoenix ". Muggsie digested this for a minute and asked, well who's gonna rule over California? The girls burst out laughing, Babe saying Muggsie were just teasing you, which got her a punch in the arm from Muggsie as Muggsie told Cynthia " I told you about her ". Just then Mary Jane came walking up. Hi Inna she said to Muggsie ( Mary Jane and Muggsies grandmother were the only two people in Lancaster to call Muggsie by her christian name ) who's your new friend Baby she asked. This is Cynthia, Muggsies cousin from Phoenix. Momma wants you all to come in for raisin cookies and cyder Mary Jane said. Cynthia was about to meet the zaniest cast of characters that ever lived under one roof. Two hours later Cynthia was breathless as she and Muggsie were returning to Jackman street ( Muggsies house ). She was still in a state of shock. Cynthia had met the whole Gumm family. The whole family was there. Babes mother running from room to room singing and talking at the top of her voice. Her father with his charm, Babe and he almost seemed like an old vaudeville act in a world of their own sometimes. Cynthia didn't know it but she was getting a view of the Gumm family at their craziest. Usually the show business family cooled down their behavior a couple of degrees when company was present but Muggsie was a trusted family friend and because of her bond with Judy the family was just themselves when she was around. When it was time for music and to sing for visitors " as it was several times a day in the Gumm home " Cynthia heard a wide range of musical styles from the whole family all touched with sweet sadness and deep spiritual roots with a sassyness that made ones body temperature rise. When it was time for Judy to showcase her talents Cynthia heard Babe sing like the tough little gangster she met in the yard outside. Cynthia didn't know why but she believed there couldn't be anyone in the world that could sing with all of their being the way Babe did. Cynthia was realizing that Babe was singing just for her. Cynthia never had someone give her so much attention or put so much effort into pleasing her. Cynthia was helpless as Babe converted her into her disciple and gave Cynthia her promise of endless love. Never to be alone again. It was obvious she was the shining little nugget of the family and the family knew the impact she had on a new pair of visitors ears and Cynthia was an open convert to Babes magic. The two girls layed down their bikes and ran into the Ming house where they found both sets of parents in the kitchen. Momma! Momma! Cynthia cried out, I just met a family where everybody sings and the littlest girl sings louder than them all just like a grown up lady, can we go hear them sing tonight at the theater, Cynthia breathlessly concluded. Cynthia's mother and father looked back and forth at one another with concerned and confused looks on their faces. They had never seen Cynthia this excited before. They looked to Muggsies parents for a clue to this riddle and got a big laugh from Muggsies mother who explained to them all about the show business family that lived in town and owned the local theater. Cynthia's mother looked back at her daughter and said in a hesitant voice " well, we were thinking about going out to diner tonight ". Cynthia's mother looked back at the other adults and they all gave her a shrug. She turned back to Cynthia and caressed Cynthia's chin and said with a smile " anything for you my love ". Muggsie and Cynthia hollered out their thank yous and ran off out of the kitchen.
The two girls were laying on top of the two beds in Muggsies room " staring at the ceiling " talking about Babe. Muggsies record player softly playing a Victoria Spivey record ( Any Kind Of Man ) in the background. I know this sounds silly " Cynthia said " but does she know what she sounds like and what she looks like when she sings. Yea, I know what you mean Muggsie said and paused while she tried to find words for what she felt about Judy. Muggsie finally said she doesn't seem to be afraid of anything, I don't mean anything dangerous, I mean she doesn't seem to be afraid to sing or move her body. Both girls layed there quiet for a long time contemplating Muggsies thought. Cynthia had a tingling of excitement in her body as she thought of the great adventure that laid ahead that night. She felt like this was something she really believed in and she felt like she really belonged. She wondered what the Gumm theater would be like and what kind of reception she would receive from the family. She just knew that Babe would use a grown up stage and audience as a plaything for her haunting voice and irreverent humor. It was very entertaining for Cynthia to use her imagination and wonder what Babe was doing right now and the fun of getting ready to perform. Cynthia rolled her head over and saw her cousin lying there ( listening to a Gus Khan record ) Cynthia asked " what are you gonna wear tonight? " Clothes Muggsie answered. This struck Cynthia so funny she began to quietly laugh and felt all the tension leaving her body. She knew she was nice and relaxed and ready for tonight's adventure. She hopped off the bed and ran out the back of the house to the little guest cottage that Cynthia and her parents were staying in. She returned to Muggsies room with two suitcases, throwing them on the bed she opened them up and looked at Muggsie. Where do you like to sit in the theater? Cynthia asked. Sit?? Muggsie said. Well probably be with Babe and her sisters. Another shock wave of excitement flowed through Cynthia. This day was getting better and better she thought. Cynthia pulled out two dresses from her suitcases, held them up and said which one should I wear tonight? Muggsie studied the two dresses with her usual intense judgment and said ooh, I like the red one with the black stripe on it, that should get all the boys attention. ( which made Cynthia laugh. ) Cynthia said are you gonna wear your dark brown wool dress? Muggsie nodded yes. Cynthia loved the way Muggsie looked in that dress. Muggsie was a tall, statuesque, dark eyed beauty and the dress accentuated her serious and quiet demeanor. Cynthia wanted to do something to bring out Muggsies dark beautiful eyes. Everything had to be right for tonight. Cynthia set her cousin down in front of the mirror ( as a Nora Bayes record " I Could Have Had You But I Let You Pass " was now playing ) and with an eye line pencil started to tastefully unlock Muggsies dangerous mystery. Cynthia said " Muggsie " how did you and Babe become friends? Muggsie thought a while with eyes closed as Cynthia worked on her eye brows. Muggsie said well, I never talked to her but I'd see her around school alot, laughin and runnin around. She used to get on my nerves. Then one day at a Valentine days party in the basement of the school, she was playing a game with some other girls and came over and sat down beside me and lookin straight ahead, not at me, in her deep raspy voice, she said " you know what I like about you Muggsie, you don't have to worry about what ya say around you or worry that your princes aspirations aren't fully recognized by the masses. " Muggsie looked at Cynthia and said, can you believe that? Cynthia pictured it in her mind and knew that's exactly the way Babe would speak as she nodded her head. Muggsie said, so I started thinking about her in a different way from then on and weave been friends ever since. Cynthia finished with her cousins eyes and Muggsie took a long time studying her image in the mirror and said " I like that. " Cynthia sat down next to Muggsie and looked her in the eye. Inna she said, I don't tell you often enough but I love you very much. I learn alot about life from you and you teach me about myself. The two girls embraced and Muggsie gave her cousin a kiss on the side of her head and whispered in Cynthia's ear " no charge toots ". The restaurant that the two family's went to was the one in the Lancaster train station. This is where one went for good eatin and lots of it and if you liked the excitement of trains, well you were in heaven. Cynthia and Muggsie were allowed a glass of beer each and they laughed and talked at the end of the table, Cynthia's parents pleased at her sudden bond and enjoyment with her cousin Muggsie who's eyes were a big hit as everyone agreed that Cynthia's magic with her makeup kit brought out Muggsies sinister side. The girls each had the grilled pork chops smothered in fried onions covered with a mushroom gravy along with sour cream baked potatoes, glazed string beans and home made apple sauce. For desert the Train station restaurant offered home made fruit pies of all variety's from the many fruit orchards around Lancaster and homemade ice cream. The girls each had a slice of cheery pie with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream. The sun was sinking low as Muggsies father parked the Ford on Beech street near the Valley theater. The town lights turning on creating a sense of excitement for an impressionable ten year old like Cynthia. The two girls walked under the neon sign of the Valley theater ( with Muggsie pushing open the doors like she owned the place ) and walked into the red carpeted lobby with the smell of pop corn in the air. There was the muffled sound of the whole theater singing ( let me call you sweetheart I'm in love with you ) on the other side of the swinging theater doors. Muggsie pulled Cynthia's hand and yelled " come on! " Cynthia looked back at her mother and said is it all right? Her mother sent Cynthia a kiss and said " go, go be with your friends. " The two girls burst into the theater and the audience was lustily singing as only a good, plain, hard working folk could. Cynthia ran behind Muggsie all the way down to the front of the stage where they found Ethel banging away on the piano in the darkened piano pit with Judy, Virginia and Mary Jane sitting on a bench facing the audience rocking side by side as they clowned around singing along with the audience as the words were shown on the screen behind them at the back of the stage. The greeting was all happy smiles as Cynthia had hoped and all the Gumms were delighted by Muggsies made up eyes. But Cynthia was startled and was surprised to feel a loving concern for Babe because of Babes appearance. Judy had dark makeup on her face to make her look like a little black girl and they all laughed at Cynthia's shocked face. Cynthia sat down next to Judy and Muggsie ( at the other end ) sat next to Mary Jane and all holding hands joined in with the singing as a new song began " Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do ". Cynthia was having so much fun singing, waving to her parents and being intoxicated by the power of the whole audience singing and cheering for them selves at the end of each song. Suddenly Judy's father took the stage to the sound of applause, all the girls dutifully lining up at the edge of the stage on tip toes peering over the floorboards up at Frank with the colored lights bathed on him. He greeted the audience and Ethel played the opening chord on the piano to " Shes my Baby ". Cynthia saw right off the bat that Babe copied the mannerisms of her father. Franks unstructured, quick shuffling of the feet, arms lifted out as if lifting the whole world, the bending sideways back and forth at the trunk of the body with incredible facial expressions. But the difference was while you could sense the weight of Franks body moving across the stage Cynthia saw that Babes movements at the house were light as a feather and the most fluid in her family. Cynthia standing next to Babe felt Babe squeezing her hand and looked down to see Babe smiling excitedly up at her. Cynthia did not yet know that the act of touching was as important as words for communicating to Babe. Cynthia saw in Babes face an unbelievable sense of well being and self awareness that she would never again see in another human being. She didn't understand this love she felt for Judy but knew she would love her for the rest of her life. Cynthia studied the thick makeup on Judy's face and asked what are you going to sing tonight? Sun Showers Babe answered. Cynthia nodded knowingly and asked, whats it like wearing Black Face? Babe said, aw its great. I can do things that I cant normally do, its like I'm someone else. Cynthia said it must be great to express your feelings so deeply. Judy not used to getting questions so good about performing sat back down on the bench with Cynthia and the two went into a deep conversation. Babe talked about how she saw an area in the souls of people that other performers weren't touching. I feel like I wanted to stay with them forever and not just for the hour a show was on. I want to show them I'm just like them and will never leave them and will never change. Cynthia was nodding ( taking all this in ). Judy's sisters and Muggsie noticed the deep conversation going on and sat down with Judy and Cynthia to join in. Suddenly Judy, her sisters and Muggsie were talking about shows past, the new world they were creating and life being on the road. Cynthia couldn't believe she was at the center of this discussion while a show was going on all around them and was afraid to move in case this surrealistic spell be broken. Frank was half way through his song and was puzzled at not seeing his daughters with their fingers on the edge of the stage peering over the footlights to watch him. He was amused at the thought that something special must be going on. Ethel was looking down at the girls huddled together in conversation around Cynthia. Ethel knew a trouble maker when she saw one. Janey honey " Ethel called out " its almost time. Mary Jane took over on the piano and Ethel said to Judy, Baby you be on time. Yes momma Judy answered. As Frank finished his song Ethel walked out on the stage to thunderous applause. All the girls at the edge of the stage now peering up at the Gumm parents. The town folk in the audience recognized in Frank and Ethel a craftsmanship founded in hard work and tradition and considered themselves lucky to have these two professionals in their town. With Mary Jane playing the piano the two went into a love song the way only Frank and Ethel could. It was as much visual as it was musical the way Ethel and Frank lovingly looked at one another and peered out into the audience presenting themselves as one entity including the audience in this oneness as a secret message was conveyed to all that love was the most powerful force in the world and it filled everyone watching with hope and inspiration. Cynthia was shocked to see Babe creeping on to the stage from the curtain behind Frank and Ethel ( Cynthia being so entranced by the Gumm parents performance that she didn't notice Judy running around back stage ) Cynthia could see and hear the audience nudging one another and chuckling as they saw Babe approaching her parents. That's when Cynthia realized that Babe was the star of the show. Cynthia could sense an electric current flowing on the stage now that wasn't there before. Cynthia had worried about how Babe would handle this adult audience but could see that Babe had been doing this for years and had them eating out of the palm of her hand and Cynthia knew Babe could do no wrong. Cynthia realized it should be Babes non performing day to day life that should be on stage as well. The way she would flap her arms around and talk serious with an endless assortment of laughing sounds while her quick mind was always working that complemented and brought a deeper appreciation to her performances. Judy was tugging on her fathers pantslegg and her mothers skirt while they ignored her singing their song as Judy showed her exasperation to the audience much to their merriment. Cynthia never understood her mothers statements that what she loved most about Cynthia's father was his sense of humor but now Cynthia understood what her mother meant. Babes self depreciative humor ( which no one should have at eight years old ) was the window to peer into Babes genius and Cynthia would love Babe for it above all of Babes gifts. The song ended with Babe being lifted by her father and held between Frank and Ethel to the cheers of the audience. Mary Jane and Virginia ran up on stage to join Judy and Ethel returned to the piano pit. Ethel looked at Muggsie and Cynthia and said you two girls come sit with me. Muggsie and Cynthia sat on both sides of Ethel as she began playing the piano for the Gumm sisters first song. This time it was Mary Jane and Virginia communicating their exasperation to the audience as Babe hammed it up. This separation of the older sisters from Babe drew attention to and highlighted the femine quality's of Mary Jane and Virginia ( which drew the Lancaster boys to them like magnets ) while Judy's rambunctious behavior and humor showed all that Judy was the foundation that the Gumm family pivoted on. Just then Frank returned to the piano pit putting his hands on the back of Ethels shoulders and kissing her on the cheek. Frank ruffled the top of Cynthia's head and said " having fun honey? " Oh yes! Mr Gumm she said excitedly, you and Mrs Gumm were wonderful. Why thank you darlin Frank said in his Tennessean draw with a bow at his waist. Frank was leaning over Ethel's shoulder from behind as Ethel played the piano laughing and pointing and commenting to Ethel on Babes exploits. Ethel soon became caught up in Babes funny liberty's while critiquing to Frank her daughters performance. Cynthia started to go into a dream. She needed to let go of all of the distractions around her and listen to what Babe was trying to tell her. A change occurred in Cynthia and she saw that Babe was dying and being reborn every second. Cynthia would be at peace now and would never pass judgment on Babe the rest of her life. As Cynthia awoke from her dream she found herself standing on a small box in the piano pit so she could rest her elbows on the stage. Above her in her black face was Babe singing Sun Showers. The audience was already a little upset and uncomfortable of having the secrets in their souls being opened up and laid bare by a child. Cynthia saw that there was someone else behind Babes makeup, that she would never see again. Babe was caressing the hurt in the peoples souls and raising the dead for Babe was the culmination of all that laid before her. When the audience could take no more Babe gently charmed them with her smile and the audience saw the humor of what she had put them through. The next two weeks were the happiest of Cynthia's life. She spent the next two weeks of her vacation exclusively in the company of Judy and Muggsie. Cynthia learned every nook and cranny of Lancaster as she rode around on her bike with Judy and Muggsie. The " Amargosa creek " on the western edge of Lancaster where the girls would wade in the water and look for frog eggs, the dozens of candy and soda shops throughout town. There was the " plunge " the local swimming pool where the girls would work on their tans and watch the boys. Muggsie and Cynthia having to hold Judy down and cover her mouth as Judy would work herself up with her disgusting desires and filthy language with no pretense of self control. One day they took Cynthia over to the " Point " the Black section of Lancaster to meet one of the most extraordinary characters in Babes career. Her name was " Sassy ". She was a big black momma who was a music teacher. Judy and Muggsie discovered her one day as they were pushing their bikes through the Point. It was love at first sight between Judy and Sas. Sas taught Judy how to breath and stand and to let her mind focus and trust only her singing as Judy mimed Sass's body language as she would stand right in front of Judy during lessons. Ethel knew Babe would have to seek out ( on her own ) musical inspiration away from home one day and never questioned Babes visits to the Point. Cynthia would see Sasys influence projected in the future movies of Babe in years to come. In between music lessons Sassy would also teach the girls about life as she was a master of many subjects. History, literature, philosophy, mathematics, languages. The three girls would sit on the floor ( gaping up with open mouths ) as they watched Sassy pacing back and forth at night in her house as she taught them on the subject of men. " Girls, don't let no man put your puddin on the stove, because their rats and not even the Lord above will save you from their sweet talk which no fool alive should ever listen to ". It was said by her friends that Sassy died of a broken heart not long after Babe finally left Lancaster. Cynthia was even invited on one of the world famous " Judy Garland Myriad Voyages " across the San Gabriel Mt's to Los Angeles for an audition. Cynthia loved to fight and roughhouse as much as Judy and Muggsie and the inside of that Buick was a madhouse of insanity as Ethel was completely overwhelmed. The three girls would often sleep over together in Judy's or Muggsies bedroom. One night they were ridding their bikes home late one night from a trip out in the desert and stopped at the Thompson farm on the edge of town to sleep that night as sometimes they would. Mrs Thompson fed them and put beds out for them in the front enclosed porch. In the middle of the night Cynthia was awoken by Judy. Baby, are you alright? Cynthia asked with a concerned voice. Judy said I'm all right, I just wanted to ask you something. Cynthia made room for Judy and covered her up with her blanket and said, what is it honey? Judy said, does your mother love you Cynthia? Cynthia was startled and said of course she does Baby, why do you ask such a thing. Judy said, I don't know if my momma loves me. Why of course she does Baby, your her daughter, how could she not love you? Cynthia had seen Ethel look at Babe in a chillingly detached way and she had sensed an uneasy tension between Judy's parents. Listen Baby Cynthia said ( as she caressed Judy's brow ) parents are different than us. They have to deal with alot of awful things that we don't know about. They have to find their own ways of carrying on, but we are their whole world to them and they would do anything for us. Babe seemed more at ease now and smiled. Are you gonna get married someday Cynthia? Judy asked. Of course I am honey Cynthia said. I'm gonna have a nice house and two boys and two girls. One of them is going to be just like you. Judy smiled and said, I'm gonna get married to a real nice man and have a big family. You, me and Muggsie can all live close by and well have all our children running around and well get real old together and be dribbling our food down our chins and sayin, what! what! to each other. Judy and Cynthia were laughing out loud by this time and with tears running down their cheeks as Muggsie awoke and sat up in her bed and said, what the heck are you two laughin about? Aw go back to sleep Muggsie, Babe said, well wake you when its time for breakfast. With that, Muggsie rolled back over and let out a big fart. I love that girl, Judy giggled. Then came the day Cynthia had to go back home. There was many tears and hugs and Babe gave Cynthia the blue ribbon she often wore in her hair. Cynthia was driven away. She would never see Babe again. When Muggsie wrote Cynthia to tell her that Babes family had moved to Los Angele's, Cynthia began to correspond more often with Muggsie to give her comfort, and when Muggsie wrote Cynthia that Babe had a movie contract, Cynthia wasn't surprised. Several years later Cynthia, as a young woman, came back to Lancaster to live, work, be near her cousin Muggsie and walk the same streets she walked with Babe years before. Cynthia and Muggsie would sit together in the Valley theater to watch each new film that Babe made. As the years past, they would sit with their boyfriends, husbands and children. After each movie they would hold court in the Jazz cafe as friends and family would listen to stories from Muggsie and Cynthia about the famous Judy Garland. As the years and movies kept rolling past it became harder and harder for Cynthia to see the girl that she remembered from her youth, but Muggsie could always point out a spark or flicker that would warm Cynthia's heart. Then the movies stopped.
( 1969, 30th street train station, Philadelphia Pennsylvania )
The older woman was seated in one of the long, deep, wooden benches in the echoy, cavernous train station. She was digging through her purse for something but not able to find what she was looking for. She looked at the woman on the bench across from her and said, Inna, do you have any chewing gum? No I don't honey, but your daughter is going to bring us some. It was on her list. Where is Frances, shes been gone a long time, ( the first woman asked ). Inna said, well you gave her a long list Cynthia, shes probably just stretching her legs. Cynthia saw her twenty eight year old daughter at the far end of the station approaching them. She walked with purpose and style. Her lithe frame and shapely legs showing confidence with her head held high and raven hair ( with a faded blue ribbon in it ) thickly swaying on her shoulders. She was a stunner. As she approached she said to Cynthia " momma, I have your grapefruit juice, chicken salad sandwich, chewing gum and magazines ". Frances turned to Inna and said " aunt Muggsie, here's your cheese steak and soft pretzel with mustard, milk and Pennsylvania post cards. Cynthia said "Frances" you are a good daughter and I don't know how we could have made this trip without you. Muggsie said, your right Cynthia, Francis is a golden model of efficiency and dependability. Cynthia picked up on Muggsies lead and said, why if Frances worked for the Pennsylvania rail road the trains would not only run on time but would be clean and neat ( leaving Muggsie with the topper ) and the conductor and porters would be as sweet as punch. Frances was silent for five seconds while biting her lip ( while Cynthia and Muggsie hung their heads, quietly choking back their laughter ) and then continued on her information that their rooms in New York city were confirmed for tonight and that aunt Virginia's train from San Antonio was on schedule. Frances sat next to Muggsie resting her head on the inside of Muggsies shoulder as was her way as Muggsie caressed Frances hair and kissed her forehead. I have change
for you aunt Muggsie, Frances whispered. You keep it darlin Muggsie replied. You spoil that girl to much, Cynthia teasingly said. Muggsie said, we don't spoil her enough and the two older women held each others eyes. Cynthia knew Muggsie was right as she watched the two of them look at a magazine together and quietly talk ( which Cynthia could watch until the end of time ). It was Frances that returned Babe to Cynthia and Muggsie. Frances would collect and play Judy's records at the house in Lancaster and bring home magazine photos and information about Babes concert career. Cynthia could see the old Babe she knew now that Judy had put on weight and her voice on her records showed it was the old do or die Babe. Frances ( who became a Judy Garland nut of the first order ) traveled with her fiance to see Judy perform at the Thunderbird room in Las Vegas and at the War Memorial in Rochester N.Y. She worshiped the ground that her mother and Muggsie walked on and converted many of her friends to Judy disciples. Then came the day when Babe died. As all of the stories of Babes terrible drug addiction became common knowledge Cynthia and Muggsie never discussed it. Secretly Cynthia was ashamed of what she thought. She felt that if Babe had lived a quiet, dignified life Cynthia would have questioned the wonderful world that Babe created in her when Judy sang. Cynthia believed that Babes hard death proved that Babes gifts were real which Cynthia felt ashamed of her self for thinking. There was still the last part of this journey to make. The reunion with Virginia, the train to New York city and the short trip to Babes final resting place in Hartsdale above New York city. But this part would be to gut wrenching to write about. For you see, the four women have come to take Babe home. For she had been away for far to long. conwention
Authors notes.
1. People and things I made up for the story - Cynthia, Mr Frederique, Mr Taylor, Muggsie living on Jackman street, How Judy and Muggsie became friends, Lancaster train station restaurant, Shes My Baby, The Point, Sassy, Thompson farm.
2. The song ( Sun showers ) was from Judy's second movie ( Broadway Melody 1938 ). The song is not in the movie but was recorded by Igor Gorin. Judy made a recording of it but it was destroyed. Judy singing Sun showers in this story is really based on Judy actually doing an impersonation of Al Jolson singing "Mammy " in black face at this time in her life and moving her audience very deeply.
