Hello.
I'm new to this forum.
Just wondered what/why people like her.
Here's my account.
Saw her in The Wizard of Oz on TV as a kid. Probably about 1978 or 1979. Instant crush. Also, it was the first scary movie I saw. Those two elements (crush/scary) is probably why I can remember watching it that long ago in the first place.
I then heard she committed suicide when I was in middle school. I know that's very unlikely now, but I was amazed to hear it. I only knew her as Dorthy. In fact, I figured she was just a teenager when she did it.
I heard about The Dark Side of the Moon and the Wizard of Oz deal in the late 90's. That's about it.
Then, about 20 yrs later - 2 years ago, I was baby sitting my buddy's two girls and decided to throw in a movie for them to watch. It was the DVD of Wizard of Oz. The oldest girl would hide her face when the witch appeared. I realized it is still a scary movie for kids. I also realized I had good taste as a kid.
I watched the making of the Wizard of Oz, found at the end of the movie, because I've turned into a sort of amateur history buff, and it seemed to be a good reference to that time period.
At the end, she sang the rainbow song. She was extremely open at the end of the song, but then scooted off the stage, trotting by the time she got to the edge of the stage, because she was so uncomfortable. I've never seen anyone being so wide open and at the same time so insecure before. I think that's the vulnerability that's been mentioned about her. And yes, it's very attractive, especially when they're physically attractive like she was, to most men. BTW, and no offense to some of you dudes out there, I'm a very straight Judy Garland fan.
That was enough to get me on the internet and check out who she was. What a life. Holy crap!
I thought she cute in her teens, beautiful in her 20's, and not bad at all in her TV show days. But more than that, I've gotten into all kinds of music over the last 10 years. Her voice - in her 30's - was as good as anyone...ever. I would say Sinatra beats her, but I can't think of anyone else.
I bought a couple of her movies on line. I'm not a big fan of musicals. I never understood how a movie was expected to be believable when actors and actresses would spontaneously sing original songs to music coming from nowhere. But she was very convincing in her movies - probably for the same reason as above. She seems so open.
I liked For Me and My Gal. Not just because the singing made sense. They were actors/singers, and their songs in the movie mostly were rehearsal or on stage singing. It was also nice to see a movie that respected our troops. (And on that note, I admire her entertaining the troops in WW2, especially when she was already exhausted from her work at MGM). But I liked most of the movies I've seen her in, because of her, not necessarily the movies themselves.
I am also very impressed with her resilience, and sympathetic with the problems that were dumped on her. Makes mine seem petty. It's hard not to feel sorry for her. She's actually made me sympathize with modern talent that clearly can't handle the high profile / pill driven / high pressure life.
Not sure if anyone is interested in my reasons for being a fan, but I'm curious why others are.
Sorry about the length. It's my first post.
