Interesting perspective about Vincent Minnelli, Emer.
I think he was a workaholic and expected Judy to work all the time. No consideration given for her health at all.
I don't know how these people could have lived with themselves after they find out that Judy died. They must have felt partly responsible.

I never liked Minelli. He was just wrong. But Judy being Judy she fell in love with anyone who showed her affection.

Some people just don't have a conscience. I heard that Minnelli suffered from alzheimers in his later years..I wonder what all the others died of.

According to the Scientologists, psychiatrists killed Judy when they administered electroshock therapy. That made her docile and suggestible to doctors who could adminster whatever drugs they pleased. They were prescribing every day of her life until the day she died.

I was watching 'by myself'. According to the documentary, after her tv show was cancelled she never really recovered. The person responsible was James Aubrey, who hated her and wanted to ruin her career.
I don't know why he hated her??? It's funny looking at Mickey, who is very much alive today, and Judy, same age, but gone so young.

Yes..forgot about him. Nasty piece of work, along with Hunt Stromberg, the CBS tv executives. In the 'end of the rainbow' book they were solely accountable for sabotaging the show, made it impossible for her to work and to enjoy her work. They kept chopping and changing things and a critising her for being herself. She was bullied.
Another factor was Judy's weight problems. She went on a near-starvation diet to get down to being 'camera thin' and you should see how thin she looks in the show - it looks like a slight breeze could blow her over. That made her really tired and hungry and nobody can go on like that.
Just so many things killed Judy Garland. But I think being told she was no good by the bosses just about did her in and made her lose confidence in herself and that can really kill someone, psychologically. It's painful to watch that show..especially when they made jokes about her and made fun of her weight. How could they do that to someone, anyone? I find some americans have this kind of cruel sense of humour of laughing at anyone or anything they find strange or different, or laughing at others misfortune. It's not funny, it's embarassing and humiliating and hurtful. Maybe that's what people think is entertainment. I don't know.

Good point about James Aubrey. They called him the 'smiling cobra'. It seems Judy was unlucky. She was born under a dark star. Maybe all stars lives turn out that way - I guess that is the price of fame..
I was reading about Grace Kelly..how extraordinary her life turned out to be, only to have it tragically extinguished by that car accident. For every lucky break and good fortune and acclaim it seems there must be a price to pay.

I think Judy was basically insecure. She was afraid. I don't know what of but she did say tellingly that she felt like she was a fraud and would be found out (by who, I have no idea). She was even scared to perform sometimes.
When someone is that scared I think it is easy to trust the wrong people and turn to drugs and things outside yourself rather than trusting yourself. I think being a child of divorce and not knowing why her parents split up affected her. And she never got to find out as her father died. Louis B Mayer became like a father figure to her and he was obeyed without question. I don't know about the weight problem..that too might have been psychological..many people use food as emotional comfort. When she finished with MGM she put on a LOT of weight. It wasn't that she was naturally fat (just being normal and curvy is too fat for Hollywood) she seemed to eat to console herself and became obese.
This insecurity - I pretty much blame the parents. Kids pick up a lot of things from their parents and just absorb emotions like sponges. They internalise it. If they don't understand these emotions it it will come out in violent, destructive ways. Judy was too young to really know what was happening. All she wanted, like all kids, was to be normal, healthy and happy, to have a carefree existence. She was suicidal at age 19! That is far too young to be thinking of death.

I think you'll still get some people insisting she wasn't suicidal, that she was strong and had everything to live for and was happy but maybe these people are easily fooled by Judy's acting. Why anyone would fake killing themselves just to get attention (?) well I think she did get such a reputation for it and when 'high' on speed she did these outrageous things but underneath it all she really was frightened and scared.
eg in ASIB George Cukor asks her if anything is wrong when she wouldn't appear on set. "is anything wrong? I'm about to kill myself and I'm asked if anything is wrong".

'the wrong people' the 'Judy people'.. if you notice..not one of them had any religion at all..that's saying something..I mean, alot of them were Jewish born I realise and only saw her as a money making profit machine.
Judy grew up in a christian environment and then she moved to Hollywood where nobody cared if you ever went to church or not..I bet she was working Every Sunday. It just came to me the other day while watching Oz for the upteempth time when Aunty Em says she'd like to say exactly what she thinks of Elvira Gulch but being a christian woman she can't.
In those days, everything was kind of prim and proper and you'd get eaten alive if you said exactly what you thought of other people. I usually do not gossip about other people and that is true, it's unchrisitan of me, but I figure God will forgive me for speaking out. It needs to be said.
Who killed Judy Garland? Hollywood or the people she associated with? You decide.
